I went canyoning in the Azores with two of my best friends. We jumped off a 30 ft waterfall. I would like to pretend I wasn’t scared at all, but I knew it was something I wanted to do even though I was terrified. You stand there, and your mind says- I can do this, while your body says- no way. But at some point your mind wins and you find yourself hurling into the unknown, and before long you are submersed under water. You struggle to reach the top of the water and then you emerge with just utter exhilaration. You knew you would be safe all along, and you are so proud that you overcame that fear. And now you feel a little bit more confident, because at that moment you can truly call yourself a badass!
If you want to move towards your goals, you have to take some action. So while this poor blog has been set up for over a year and never started, I decided to brush the dust off and take that first step towards a big goal of becoming a happiness coach. I guess you could say I want to be a life coach that help people find happiness. That’s the number one thing people want, so why not help them achieve it?
You hear people say – “I want to be rich, I want to lose weight, I want a partner…..” then ask them why and they will say, “because I’ll be happy if I have money, I’ll be happy if I lose weight, I’ll be happy if I have someone to love.” However, the secret lies in becoming happy with how you are now, and that allows you to then attract the things you want in life. Yes, it’s the law of attraction, the Secret, or manifesting as you’ve heard it called. You might try to dismiss it as something that won’t work for you, but that’s probably because you weren’t putting real happiness or positive thought into the process.
I would have to say I have been happy for the majority of my life. I was extremely blessed to be born into a wonderful family, have always lived in a safe city, had every opportunity to succeed, and have encountered few major obstacles in my life. However, I have had many ups and downs like everyone. I’ve suffered from anxiety and depression at times, was in an emotionally abusive relationship, have been in debt, was a single mother at one point, and was obese. I’ve also put myself through grad school, raised a teenager that’s caring and not conceited, married a man I love more every year, run a half marathon every year, and rise to the top in any job I’ve worked.
I have everything that someone could want – great job, great family, great health, great friends, so what am I missing? The thing that’s missing in my life is that ability to truly help others. I love speaking to people. I like finding out what motivates them, what excites them, and I can often see the spark inside them that they may have forgotten about. I’m not sure how I do it, but I think that by really listening to people and looking for that divine within them, without judging who or what they are now, then you can start to peel back those layers of doubt or fear or social stigma that has caused them to dull that spark inside them. Nothing feels better than to help someone feel that passion inside themselves and allow them to start to believe in it.
I’ve told myself that I should wait and do some formal training, or read another 200 articles about life coaching, or one more episode of that podcast, but those are all delaying the need to take real action. So I started by posting my intent for the world to see on Facebook. Now I’ve put it in writing in a blog post. I guess there’s no stopping me now.
Maybe you will be someone that I help find their spark inside, or maybe you just want to watch my journey as I follow the path and allow my spark to finally fully shine. Either way, I only wish for you to find happiness one way or another.
What goal have you created? What big action can you take towards it, TODAY? If it’s scary, GOOD, then you know the action is big enough.
