Embracing the Inner Child

Oh to be young again….. I’m writing this post on my birthday. I can remember many of my birthdays over the years. As you get older, you become more reflective. You know more things, and unfortunately, you fear more things too! How do we get back to that carefree child that just lives in the moment and is constantly searching for joy?

As a very young child, we live every moment in the now. We are aware of all of our senses – What do I feel? What can I touch? How does this taste? It’s a constant exploration of everything around us. When was the last time you were fully aware of the present moment? How often can you clear your mind of thoughts of the past, or thinking about the future? Do you ever just sit outside in the grass and watch the clouds pass by? Do you stop and smell the roses when you pass them? Do you consciously eat and enjoy the flavors in each bite of your meal? I’m guilty of wolfing down a meal as I rush from place to place. But I have gotten better at spending time in nature and really absorbing its beauty and joy. My goal for this year is to make meditation a part of my daily life as well.

As a young adult, I assumed all my ideas were going to work. I had a passion and carefree attitude that made me a fantastic entrepreneur. Did all my ideas work – nope. Did I love the excitement of creating something new and following my passion – yes! Looking back, would I change any of it – no way. Now that I’m older I’m so fearful of change or doing something that might fail. It’s a big lesson that I plan to work on this year. I have a dream, and I need to embrace that desire to follow my passion even if there is a chance that I might fail. The excitement of jumping towards my passion again will be worth it.

Remember that the child you once were is still inside of you. Would that child be proud of where you are now? Did you accomplish some of those dreams you had as a child? What would that child say to you now? Would they want you to be more adventurous, more caring, more educated? Would they tell you to have more fun? Think back to those dreams and wishes and days full of joy, and bring a little bit of that back into your life now.

Words of wisdom from your inner child – Run, jump, play, explore, make new friends, enjoy dessert, be goofy, laugh all the time, ask for help, say yes to every adventure, play outside as much as you can, wake up happy, go to bed tired and smiling.
