I Choose Happiness

Writer: Colleen AltschulColleen Altschul

Never forget that happiness is a choice. The only person you can ever truly change is yourself. You don’t just wait for happiness to find you or happen to you, it’s a state of mind. It is a choice. If you’re not happy, that’s a “you” problem, not a “me” problem, because I choose happiness.

Life is going to bring challenges. Bad things will happen. But the best part about being human is that we get to choose how we react to these things. I am by no means saying that the minute we see something awful or hear bad news that we run out and say, “Oh well, I’m so happy!” This isn’t a “fake-it-til-you-make-it” type of deal. This is a reminder that only you control your reactions to what life throws at you. You choose the frequency of your vibration, which controls what you attract into your life.

I recently had something happen that really hurt my feelings. I was awash with emotions- anger, sadness, and feelings of betrayal, doubt, anxiety, and confusion. So, I stopped and realized that I needed to take a minute to recognize what I was feeling. I sat outside and had a good cry. I took some time to go through each thought and each feeling and acknowledge it. Simply pushing them aside would have only worked for a while. To truly work through something and make your way back to happiness, you have to respect the thoughts and emotions that come up. I chose to let myself have those moments, knowing that I would also choose to return to my natural vibration of happiness sooner rather than later. After taking that time to think through my choices, I chose what action to take, rather than let myself simply react to what had happened while I was awash with emotion. Had I not taken that time, I might have taken an action that was not aligned with my higher self or done something that would have only made the situation worse.

In the end, I chose to respect the choice that someone else made, and acknowledge that their choice did cause me sadness and confusion; however, I chose not to live in that space of sadness and was able to move on and turn that challenge into a reminder to myself. While I might still be sad about what happened, I chose to wake up today and do something that brings me happiness – write for this blog! I can’t change what happened, so why spend my time being upset about it?

Enlightenment is being able to recognize that you have the power to control your vibration. Think of the stories of people that overcome the most horrific events, and how they are able to go on and do incredible things. They had the choice to remain in that cycle of emotion, or take action to move towards their own happiness. Happiness comes from the choice to see the world as being full of possibilities and knowing you have the opportunity to allow them to come to you. So I take my recent upset and move beyond it. Losing one thing makes space for something new, and I choose to allow the Universe to bring more good into my life.

Choose happiness, because the alternative isn’t nearly as fun. Good vibes = Good lives
