Is it possible to be high on life? Can you find pleasure by avoiding pain? Statistics show that more people are choosing to remain sober. More people are moving towards a plant based diet. These are small shifts for sure, but it’s nice to see a trend of healthy living. Could the social standard of grabbing drinks after work shift to meeting for a walk around the park?
It feels really good to be healthy! I know this because I have spent the last few years focusing on improving my health. I have paid attention to how different foods make me feel. Exercise has become something that I enjoy and look forward to each day. Finding ways to handle stress by doing more of what I love keeps me balanced. Even keeping my house organized and clean improves my outlook on life.
None of those life improvements happened quickly. Habits take time to establish- 90 days if you look into the research behind them. As I accomplish one goal, I set a new one to keep improving my life every year. It’s important to not get overwhelmed with how much you want to change in your life and to simple notice if you are constantly working to improve it. Most change is difficult in the beginning, but eventually you start to see the benefits.
Once you feel the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, you increasingly wish to avoid the things that throw you out of balance- staying up late, drinking, drugs, overeating, clutter, and being around negative people. You will appreciate all the work it takes to reach that feeling of healthy and be far less inclined to have that drink at a work dinner or grab that pint of ice cream late at night.
Waking up feeling rested and ready to face the day is intoxicating. You look forward to each morning. You crave that next high of a great workout or healthy meal. You take pride in your choices and that positive attitude radiates to people around you. Making positive choices with your lifestyle is the best gift you can give yourself. If you are striving for enlightenment in this lifetime, learning to take care of your body and your mind is a requirement.
Making the positive choice isn’t always easy, but it gets you one step closer to that feeling of healthy. Feeling healthy and balanced provides its own type of continual pleasure. It might not be as extreme as the pleasure you get from an intoxicating substance, but it also lasts. The pleasure of eating that second piece of cake is very short lived. The enjoyment of a night out drinking can be followed with a hangover and possibly even regret about things you did or said. The high you feel from accomplishing the goal of finishing your first marathon will last a lifetime.
